Ultra violet rays, commonly known as UV rays, is a form of electromagnetic radiation that is present in sunlight, but also is used in tanning beds and tanning lamps. The rays damage DNA in skin cells, which when exposed to over time can increase ones risk for the genetic mutations that lead to skin cancer. The wavelength of UV rays is shorter than visible light, which is associated with skin burning.
