Twice a number added to another number is –8. The difference of the two numbers is 2. Find

Answer:

-2 and -4

Explanation:

→ Make variable's for each number

x is the first variable and y is the second

→ Form equations

2x + y = -8

x - y = 2

→ Solve

3x = -6

→ Divide both sides by 3

x = -2

→ Resubstitute that into one of the equations

-2 - y = 2

→ Add 2 on both sides

-y = 4 therefore y = -4
