Once a month, the female releases an ovum (one egg) or sometimes two (ova) . If an ovum has been released, and the couple have sex, a sperm can unite with it, fertilise it and make the first cell of a new baby. Once one sperm has fertilised the ovum, no other sperm can get in.

Answer:

The majority of animals reproduce sexually, which is where a sperm fertilizes an egg. A new life is formed when genetic information from each parents is combined through a process called meiosis. Each parents gives 23 chromosomes, so when the egg becomes fertilized, the baby has 46 chromosomes. In each round of cell division, cells undergo 4 stages - prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. If the sperm carries an x chromosome, the fetus will be female. But if the sperm carries a y chromosome, the fetus will me male.

Hope this helps!
