Lana and Jeff each randomly surveyed 15 students about their favorite types of movies. Are these samples representative of the school population? Explain.

No, the samples are not large enough to be representative.

Yes, both samples are random, so they are representative.

No, the samples might include some of the same people, so they are not representative.

Answer:

D but see below.

Explanation:

  • This question is badly thought out. 15 might be enough to be representative if the school only contains about 100 people.
  • If B is true then it would be the answer.
  • If D was true, it would be the answer.
  • If C was true, it could be the same answer.

So you have a question that has no clear answer. If Jeff took grade 11 and Lana took grade 12, that would make the answer much clearer. At least there would be no duplicates.

If you could refine the question a little more, you might get a clearer answer. I don't think this question should be asked and I sure don't think you should try and give an answer.

However that's not how schools work. So I would pick D, but by some bizarre method, the asker (like edge) might think of a way to make A B or C true.
