I'm so confused on why its -33 because dont two negatives make a positive when mulitplied?

can someone explain why it is -16-17 instead of 16-17?​

-4² = -1 * 16

-4² = -16

Use parenthesis to square

(-1 * 4)² = (-4)²

(-4)² = 16
