Suppose that the width of a certain rectangle is 1 inch more than one-fourth of its length. The perimeter of the rectangle is 72 inches. Find the length and width of the rectangle.

Length = 28 inches

Width = 8 inches

Explanation:

Let length be L

Let Width be W

Given : W = 1 + (1/4)L

Perimeter = 2 x ( L + W)


72 = 2 (L + (1 + (1)/(4) L))\\\\36 = L + 1 + (1)/(4) L\\\\36 - 1 = (5)/(4) L\\\\35 = (5)/(4) L\\\\5L = 35 * 4\\\\L = (140)/(5) = 28 \ in


W = 1 + ((1)/(4) * 28) = 1 + 7 = 8 \ in
