are used in the Example to show that 2(x + 1) + 2x is equivalent to 4x + 2.

2 times a number, plus 1, plus 2 times a number, is equal to 4x + 2.

The way they factored ↓

2 x 2 = 4

4x = 4 times a number or itself multiple times

4 + 2 is the same as a number times 1 equals 2.

If that's the case, x = 2.
