I would underline five more than a number p is less than 17. This helps you because now when you think of 5 more than you think of addition. Which would be p+5. Then, this number is less than 17. So it would be p+5<17. For the solution, you would subtract 5 from both sides. Why? That way it frees up and you are left with p. Since that is all you want. Then, once you do that your solution should be p<12. Since that is what you will be left with.
