One important subdiscipline is vertebrate paleontology, the study of fossils of animals with backbones. Vertebrate paleontologists have discovered and reconstructed the skeletons of dinosaurs, turtles, cats, and many other animals to show how they lived and their evolutionary history.

You would probably have to observe what your looking at. Look closely, do you see any cracks or crevices in the bones you are looking at? Do you see any indents or chipped pieces? Color, shape and size can also really help when observing a fossil. After close observation use resources and figure out what kind of fossil it is. Hope this helps!
