The revolt began with a student protest that gathered thousands of people across downtown Budapest to join the Hungarian Parliament.
A student delegation who entered the building of the national radio station in order to broadcast their demands was arrested. When the crowd demanded his release, the Államvédelmi Hatóság (ÁVH, the regime's political police) opened fire from the building. News spread quickly and riots broke out across the capital.........
