Pictured below is the Cotton Gin, Prior to its invention by Eli Whitney it was very labor-intensive and timely to separate cotton and remove all pits from it. the cotton gin removed these pits from the cotton and cleaned it in effect. I was in fact not profitable to grow cotton a large scale prior to the invention of the Cotton Gin. With the introducton of the Cotton Gin the profitability of growing cotton and preparing it for sale became greater, resulting in plantation owners being able to grow cotton in large scale or as a big crop. THis increased the need for more slaves to work the fields and the Cotton Gin. There was a rise in the number of slaves being used on plantations during this time.
