Do this by making this 2-part function into one all-in. Do this by finding a common denominator and then writing the function as one, over the common denominator, x. When we do this we get the function:


y=(3x^3-2)/(x) and we will use the rule for quotients, which is the denominator times the derivative of the numerator minus the numerator times the derivative of the denominator, all over the denominator squared. For us, that is, in steps:


y'=(x(9x^2)-(3x^3-2)(1))/(x^2) which simplifies to


y'=(9x^3-3x^3+2)/(x^2) which simplifies finally to


y'=(6x^3+2)/(x^2). Nothing else you do can make this any more simplified.
