We are collecting bananas. Alf has 4 times as many as Jim, and Jim has three times as many as Sid. Altogether they have 192. How many does Sid exactly have?

Explanation:

We are collecting bananas.

Lets represent, the number of bananas collected by:

Alf = x

Jim = y

Sid = z

Jim has three times as many as Sid.

y = 3z

Alf has 4 times as many as Jim

x = 4y

x = 4 × 3z

x = 12z

Altogether they have 192.

x + y + z = 192..... Equation 1

We substitute

3z for y and 12z fox x in Equation 1

12z + 3z + z = 192

16z = 192

z = 192/16

z = 12

Therefore, since, the number of bananas Sid collected = z

Hence, Sid has 12 bananas exactly
