  2. The second thing to do is to test what is under the square root (called the discriminate). If you get something weird like the square root of a minus number, then the graph should have told you that the quadratic does not cross the x axis at all.
  3. When you have done those two things, you are ready to use the whole quadratic. Watch out for -b at the beginning. If b is - 4 (for example) the -b will make it 4
