Aaron has $35 and a coupon for 35% off for one

item. He wants to buy a new pair of shoes for $41.
Will he be able to get the shoes after the
discount?

Find 35% of $41. You can basically replace the "of" with multiplication, and then remember that "percent" means "per hundred", so divide 35 by 100.

You will get:

(35/100) x 41

Putting it into decimal form:

0.35 x 41

And you get: $14.35

Remember, you're not done yet, because we have just found the amount of money that will be taken off of the original price. So we have to subtract this from $41.

$41.00 - $14.35 = $26.65

Now compare the prices! Aaron has $35, and with the discount, the shoes will only cost $26.65!

$26.65 is less than $35, so he will be able to get the shoes! Yay for Aaron!
