The easiest way to find the area of a compound shape is to break it up into parts. I would divide it into a square and rectangle.

The area of the square is 4 times 4 which equals 16cm.

The area of the rectangle equals 12 times 5 which equals 60cm

Add the two together to end up with 76cm
