Vi. What is water pollution?

vii. State three causes of water pollution/sources of water
viii. Give the effect of water pollution.​

Answer: Water pollution is the act of polluting water bodies with pollutants and waste products.


Causes of water pollution;

I. Sewage: City sewage system

ii. Chemical waste: Industries and ships at harbors.

iii. Excreta or farces: Human and Animal dung.


Effects of Water pollution;

I. It supports the use of pathogens that can cause diseases.

ii. It makes water unfit for human consumption.

iii. It can kill aquatic organisms.

Iv. It produces unpleasant odors.

v. It can accumulate in the human body and become toxic later.

vi. It serves as a medium for breeding pathogens

vii. Food chain is affected.

viii. It leads to migration of animals.

ix. It leads to rapid vegetative growth of water plants which makes fishing and movement impossible. eg. Algae bloom.

vi. Water pollution occur when harmful substances like chemicals or microorganisms contaminate streams, revers, lakes and other water bodies.

vii. Causes of water pollution are: industrial wastes, oil pollution and acid rain.

viii. Contaminated water becomes unfit for consumption by humans and cattle. As the result, there is drastic reduction of the fish population. Water pollution results in increase case of water borne diseases like cholera, diarrhea, etc.
