A student is collecting dimes and quarters as a fundraiser for their CAS project. After the first week, they tasked a younger sibling to count them up, who found there to be 211 coins. After taking the coins to the bank, the student was given $37.30. Find how many dimes did the student collect, and how many quarters did the sudent collect?

Explanation:

Given

There are total of 211 coins

The worth of the coins is
\$37.30

Suppose there are x dimes and y quarters

A dime is equivalent to 10 cents and quarter is equivalent to 25 cents


\therefore x+y=211\quad \ldots(i)\\\Rightarrow 0.1x+0.25y=37.30\\\Rightarrow x+2.5y=373\quad \ldots(ii)

Solving (i) and (ii) we get


x=103,y=108

Therefore, student collects 103 dimes and 108 quarters.
