The southern colonies economy relied on agriculture because of geological conditions and climate. Many of the settlers in the South were prosperous aristocrats from England who owned land in abundance. Many planters grew cash crops like cotton, tobacco, indigo, and rice which was profitable as exported to England. Georgia, South Carolina, and Maryland became some of the plantations states where cash crops were grown with the help of the slaves.
