the formula for the discriminant is
b^2 - 4•a•c
now that you have this equation, plug in the values
(-17)^2 - 4(4)(3)
you get 289-48 and that is 241 which is the value of the discriminant.
since that value is positive, there are 2 solutions. if it were negative, there would be no solutions. if it were 0, there’d be one solution
