a line perpendicular to y=1/3x + 2 must have a slope of -3 (the opposite reciprocal)

we can use slope (m) of -3 and the point (2,1) to write the equation:

y = mx + b

1 = (-3)(2) + b

1 = -6 + b

b = 7

Putting it all together you get:

y = -3x + 7
