- Two cars leave the same parking lot, with one heading north and the other heading east. After several minutes, the northbound car has traveled 6 miles, and the eastbound car has traveled 8 miles. Measured in a straight line, how far apart are the two cars? 1 I

Answer:

Explanation

Use Pythagoras theorem. The distance between the cars, 8km, is the hypotenuse of a right angled triangle, one leg of which is 6km and the other of which is, say, x km

x = sqrt(8^2 - 6^2) km.

You can crunch the numbers.
