Hence, x + 40 + 3x - 20 = 180

We now solve for x using the equation created

x + 40 + 3x - 20 = 180

step 1 combine like terms

x + 3x = 4x

40 - 20 = 20

we now have 4x + 20 = 180

step 2 subtract 20 from each side
