Given:

The figure of a trapezoid.

Area of the trapezoid = 14.3 square yd.

To find:

The value of first base, i.e.,
b_1.

Solution:

From the given figure, it is clear that

Vertical height = 2.6 yd

Second base = 7.9 yd

The area of a trapezoid is:

A=(1)/(2)(b_1+b_2)h

Putting
b_2=7.9,\ h=2.6,\ A=14.3 in the above formula, we get

14.3=(1)/(2)(b_1+7.9)(2.6)

2* 14.3=(b_1+7.9)(2.6)

28.6=2.6b_1+20.54

Isolate the variable term.

28.6-20.54=2.6b_1

8.06=2.6b_1

(8.06)/(2.6)=b_1

3.1=b_1

Therefore, the value of
b_1 is equal to 3.1 yd.
