In Chapter 12 of Tuck Everlasting, Tuck takes Winnie out on the pond to try and explain why she must not tell anyone about the spring of water that makes people live forever. The natural setting of the pond, and the water of the pond itself serve as symbols of life and time and change, helping Tuck make his point.
