An acronym is a pronounceable word formed from the first letter of each word in a phrase. The newly combined letters create a new word that becomes a part of everyday language, and helps people communicate their sentences quickly and much more efficiently. Acronyms are a commonly used technique of speaking in the English language, and are widely used by many people. There is a variety of different acronyms, used over long periods of time, some such as ‘SCUBA’ and ‘RADAR’ dating back to the 1940s and 1950s. Almost every English-speaking person uses acronyms and abbreviations in their everyday language, to make communication easier and faster between conversations.
Technology and social media has heavily developed the use of acronyms and abbreviations among people, as many people use acronyms while texting (for example, acronyms such as ‘OMG’ and ‘LOL’ are two of the most used in the English language online), to create a quicker method of typing. As well as this, companies and government officials use acronyms for their work (such as FAQ or MBA). Acronyms are also used generally too, for thing such as time, countries and organisations, which highlights just how common acronyms are in day-to-day life and in the English speaking world.
