The Emancipation Proclamation altered the war in two ways, the first by rallying northern abolitionists to the Union cause. This gave the Union more volunteers, including almost 200,000 free blacks and escaped slaves, much-needed political support and, money, lots of money, mainly from wealthy New England investors.
