Why are these revolts so important? How did Nat Turner's plan backfire?

Nat Turner destroyed the white Southern idea that slaves were content with their existence or were too docile to revolt violently. His uprising hardened Southern whites' anti-slavery sentiments and led to additional repressive legislation limiting slaves' education, mobility, and assembly.
