Explanation:

When adding fractions, all you are doing is adding the whole numbers first, 2+2, and then putting that aside. So with 4 on the side, we will then add our fractions. We will line them up and add the numerators and leave the denominator the same. If the numerator is higher than the denominator, we create a whole and subtract the denominator until we are with a smaller numerator. However many times we subtracted this would add a whole number. However, we do not have to do this so we will add 1 and 2 to equal 3. This means we have 3/3 or one whole so we will add 1 to the 4 we had earlier to get 5. Hope this helps :D
