A square with sides 8 inches in length has a circle inscribed in it. The circle has a radius of 4. What is the area of part of the square not in the circle.

To get the area inside the circle but outside the square, we simply get the difference of their areas.

Ac=r2π=42π=16πA square is also a rhombus (with equal diagonals), so we can use the formula for the area of the rhombus. What do we use as the value of the diagonal? The diameter of the circle!As=12d1d2=12d2=12(82)=12(64)=32

Hence, A=16π−32 If you think you won't be able to remember the formula of the rhombus, we can go the usual way of getting the area of the square.As=s2Now, we need to find the length of the side. To do this, we can form an imaginary right isosceles triangle with the radius of the circle as legs and the side as the hypotenuse. How do we know the triangle is right?
