How is multiplying two decimals different from multiplying a whole number and a decimal

Explanation:

For example, 3 x 0.4 = 1.2

0.3 x 0.4 = 0.12

The only thing that changes are the amount of numbers behind the decimal. So when multiplying decimals, you just multiply like normal (3 x 4 = 12), then you count the amount of decimal spaces (two) and you take the number (12) and move the decimal place to the left twice. 12.0 would go to 1.2 if multiplying by a tenth.
