At a marlin fishing tournament, the winning fish was 342 5/16 pounds. The average fish caught weighed 167 3/8 pounds. What is the difference between the weight of the winning fish and the weight of the average fish caught?

Step 1: Subtract the average from the winning tournament pounds
342 5/16 - 167 3/8 = 174 15/16

Therefore, the DIFFERENCE between not is 174 15/16

Answer:

174 15/16 lbs or 2799/16 lbs

Explanation:

to find the difference of the weight of the winning fish and the avg fish, I'm assuming you just need to subtract the values from each other.

so first I'm just gonna convert the mixed numbers into improper fractions because its easier to do math that way (for me).

342 5/16 = 5477/16 winning fish

167 3/8 = 1339/8 avg fish

now I need to find the difference between them so I'll just subtract the smaller number from the bigger number.

5577/16 - 1339/8 = difference

but wait oh no, they don't have the same denominator, so I'll multiply the 1339/8 by 2/2 so that I get a number over 16.

5577/16 - 2678/16 = difference

2799/16 lbs or 174 15/16 lbs (if you want to convert it into a nice mixed number)
