49 inches squared -
You have to take the little square in the corner and find the area of that (a = 3 x 3) then find the area of the rectangle (a = 8 x 5) and add them together to get 49 inches squared

Answer:

49\:\mathrm{in^2}

Explanation:

The area of the composite figure consists of two rectangles. Thus, the total area of the figure is:

8\cdot 3+5\cdot 5=24+25=\boxed{49\:\mathrm{in^2}}
