Two trains started from the same station at the same time and traveled in opposite

directions. After traveling 4 hours, they were 480 miles apart. The rate of the fastest
train exceeded the rate of the slow train by 10 mph. Find the rate of each train.

Answer:

Fastest train: 65 mph

slowest: 55 mph

Explanation:

Divide 480 by 4

=120

To find average speed divide 120 by 2

=60

call the speed of the slowest train y.

y+(y+10)=120

2y=110

y=110/2=55

y+10=65
