Someone said the answer is -5 but can you explain how?

he started with $5 then gets $10 so he then had $15 but he bought a toy which was $5 so $15-$5= so after that he had $10. On his birthday he receives $10 from 3 of his friends so $30 in total plus the $10 he had from before and he had to pay $45 but he only had $40 therefore the answer is -5.
