A digital marketing specialist is interested in studying the percent of customers who use online coupons when making an online purchase. To investigate this further, the digital marketing specialist would like to test the claim that the percent of customers who use online coupons when making an online purchase is different than 75%. They decide to complete a hypothesis test at a 10% significance level. They sample 80 online customers, and determine the sample percent to be 90%. The following is the data from this study:

Sample size = 80 online customers
Sample proportion = 0.90
Identify the null and alternative hypothesis for this study by filling in the blanks with the correct symbol (E,F, <, or > to represent the correct hypothesis.)

Answer:

H0 : p = 0.75

H1 : p ≠ 0.75

Explanation:

The population proportion, P0 = 0.75 ;

Claim is that proportion of customers who use online coupons when making purchases is actually different than P0 = 0.75 (this is the calm) and the difference could be either more or less

Hence, the null hypothesis H0 : says P0 is 0.75 ;

H0 : p = 0.75

The alternative hypothesis, negating the null hypothesis argues that the proportion is not 0.75 (the difference could be either to the right or left).

H1 : p ≠ 0.75
