Joe wants to find the height of a pole. Beginning at the pole, Joe walks 25 feet along

the shadow that the pole casts until his shadow ends at the same point as the pole's
shadow. Joe is 6-feet tall and his shadow is 9-feet long. How tall is the pole?

Answer:

Height of pole = 22.67 ft or 272 inches

Explanation:

I've drawn a triangle to depict the poles height, it's shadow, Joe's height and shadow and attached it.

From the image attached, we can see the height of the pole is depicted as x.

Now, the sum of the distance Joe walked along the pole shadow and his own shadow = 25 + 9 = 34 ft

Now, by similar triangles ratio, we can find x. Thus;

x/6 = 34/9

Making x the subject, we have;

x = (34 × 6)/9 ft

x = 22.67 ft or 272 inches
