Masks are very important in traditional African societies because they are often used as central parts of rituals and ceremonial dances. These masks will represent a deity (a god/goddess in polytheistic religions) who are supernatural beings that are considered divine or sacred. These deities ensure a successful harvest and address tribal needs during time of war. Lastly, masks can also represent the spirits of deceased ancestors.
