In Canada there is a lot of snow at winter and in summer it can get pretty hot and you might even get a unexpected snow blizzard at the middle of march. Also since its hotter you can grow crops now, but if they didnt live very close to the border they wouldn't have a lot of crops growing because of the snow that falls and blizzard attacks.
