In same x hours, the distance traveled by Ricardo will be 65 * x = 65x miles

Since they are traveling in opposite directions, the distance traveled at that time by Karen will be less than what Ricardo has traveled since he is traveling at a greater speed

However, the sum of whatever they have traveled will be equal to the distance between them

thus;

59x + 65x = 279

124x = 279

x = 279/124
