1. because men wanted to prevent women from gaining the economic power that they had held for so long. as well as married women having to stay home and care for children and submit to the husband.

2. Norman made a joking argument during the depression that if you just fire the women and hired the unemployed men it would solve the depression. "Simply fire the women, who shouldn't be working anyway, and hire the men. Presto! No unemployment. No relief rolls. No depression."
