The Civil war started because of the Southern States leaving the Union. The president wanted to preserve the union. When North and South Carlonia left the Union Fort Summenter remained property of the Union the first shots were fired when the South would not allow the North to deliver supplies to fort Summenter. No it was not possible to prevent the civil war, the differences between the North and South were so vast that there was no coming to agreement.
