Gretchen must be bossy, mean, and confident because she always has some girls following her, and they obey her. Gretchen wants to win the race so badly so she can rub it in Squeaky's face that she won. She is willing to cheat and train to win. The consequence is that someone may find out and she will get in a heap of trouble. This desire tells us that she is very mean and will do anything to get what she wants.
