The gravity of earth and the moon pull the asteroid closer most likely brining it in a decaying orbit around the planet but the orbit happens to be in a course heading straight to the moon where it crashes on the surface with little resistance as there is very little atmosphere to slow it down or burn it up. The resulting impact send moon material blasting away from the astral body some returning to the moon some staying in orbit but most dangerously some crashes down to earth.
