the black and white will both have the same area. and given that each path is 1 ft wide and initially 12 ft long we can slowly determine the area.

x times 1 will still equal x

12(1) still equals 12 so we can just write it as 12.

12+12+11+11+10+10+9+9+8+8+7+7= 114

where I came up with this? there are a total of 12 sides if you follow the black path. and by every 2 sides the path gets shorter by 1 foot.

the white side also has 12 sides if you look. therefore both the black and the white part of the shape will have an area of 114.
