After the French and Indian War, the British found themselves in much debt and they felt inclined to tax the colonies as they felt was their right. However, upon facing eventual resistance, they realised that the colonies were more independent than they had previously thought... due to their policy of salutary neglect. They tried to enforce their laws and policies with greater authority, resulting in the passage of many acts that successively and collectively angered the colonists.

If you are referring to the American Revolution 1776-1783, one of the main causes was taxation without representation. The British enacted several tax policies on the American colonies to help the British recover from the French and Indian war. However taxes like the stamp act, sugar and tea act etc. made Americans unhappy and demanding a seat in parliament to suffice the taxes. Ultimately the British had too much control on the colonies and the Americans declared independence
