Explanation:

subtract the areas of a circle from the area of a square and divide by 4

A_square = L x W

A_circle = pi x r^2

L, W= 12cm

r= 12/2cm

(A_square - A_circle) / 4

divide by 4 since the remaining portions are symmetrical
