How many comic books does Derrek own?

• y = Derrek's comic book

• x = 2y-1
• x + y=11

substitute the value of the x 2y -1 into the equation x+ y =11

• 2y-1 + y=11
• 3y=12
• y = 12/3

• y=4

2y-1 , substitute the y value into the equation and we can find number of comic book that jane owns

• (2(4)-1) = 7
• x = 7

to check the answer add both numbers and you will get the total number of comic book

so according to the equation

• x + y = 11
• 7+4 = 11
• 11=11

so jane has 7 books and Derreck has 4 books
