The swimming pool shown below is a right prism with concave hexagonal bases. The owners of the pool want to paint the sides and bottom of the pool. If one gallon of paint covers 400 square feet, how many gallons of paint will be needed to paint the inside of the pool?

Answer:

  • 2.21 gallons

Explanation:

Area of sides:

  • 2(10*3 + 1/2(14 + 10)*6) = 204 square feet

Area of the bottom:

  • 20(3 + 10 + 5 + 10 + 6) = 680 square feet

Total area:

  • 204 + 680 = 884 square feet

Paint needed:

  • 884 / 400 = 2.21 gallons
