for a lot of math classes they just tell you "don't take the square root of a negative number" Then when you see this
√(-5) it looks all wrong. But, just think of the two things under the radical as


√(-1*5)

now, take the -1 out of the square root as " i "

i
√(5)

and if you want to put it into correct complex form

0 + i
√(5)
